The Timor-Leste national football team is considering renting Vietnam’s Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho) as their home ground for the upcoming Asean Cup 2024. According to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Timor-Leste’s decision comes as their home stadium does not meet the necessary standards for the tournament.
Timor-Leste recently competed in a play-off match against Brunei, securing a win and earning a spot in the Asean Cup 2024. During the play-offs, they rented Chonburi Stadium in Thailand as their home venue. However, since Timor-Leste is now grouped with Thailand in the Asean Cup 2024, it makes sense for them to shift to a new location in Vietnam for their home games. Viet Tri Stadium has emerged as a likely candidate for hosting their matches.
The Asean Cup 2024 will begin its group stage on December 8, 2024. Timor-Leste is placed in Group A alongside Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Cambodia. Should their request to rent Viet Tri Stadium be approved, it would become the venue for their home matches in the prestigious regional tournament.
