Vietnam national team holds its first training session in South Korea, with a “mystery factor” providing support

On the afternoon of November 23, the Vietnam national football team kicked off their first training session in South Korea as part of their preparations for the upcoming ASEAN Cup 2024.

Due to the rapid drop in temperature as evening approached, head coach Kim Sang Sik decided to advance the training schedule by 45 minutes. At the time the team began their session, the temperature was around 13-14°C, which was quite comfortable thanks to the mild sunshine.

The team’s training field is located about 15 minutes by bus from their hotel and is a familiar place with many memories for players from Hanoi FC. Last year, when Hanoi FC participated in the AFC Champions League 2023/2024, players like Tuan Hai, Hai Long, Xuan Manh, Thanh Chung, Duy Manh, and Van Truong trained at the same venue in preparation for their match against Pohang Steelers.

However, under the cold winter weather in South Korea, the grass on the training field had lost its vibrant green color, unlike in the warmer months. Despite this, the quality of the pitch was still suitable for the Vietnam national team to carry out their tactical drills.

In today’s session, Vietnam’s new goalkeeping coach, Lee Won Jae, officially joined the team and began working with coach Kim Sang Sik and his staff. Lee Won Jae is a well-known former South Korean footballer, who had a remarkable 18-year career with the South Korean national team, earning 132 international caps. He was a ten-time K-League Best XI player and has won numerous individual honors. Lee also made history by participating in four World Cups (1994, 2002, 2006, and 2010).

During his first session with the Vietnamese goalkeepers, Coach Lee Won Jae demonstrated his attention to detail and set high standards for the goalkeepers’ training sessions.
