The official roster for the Vietnam National Team at the ASEAN Cup 2024 has been finalized by head coach Kim Sang Sik before their departure to Laos. The South Korean tactician made the difficult decision to part ways with 7 players after the training camp.
The 7 players who will not be joining the final squad are Dang Van Lam, Phan Van Duc, Nguyen Van Truong, Tran Bao Toan, Nguyen Thai Son, Nguyen Dinh Bac, and Nguyen Quoc Viet. Among these departures, the most unfortunate is Dang Van Lam, as the goalkeeper was unable to recover from his injury in time to compete for the starting position in goal.
In addition, Phan Van Duc and Tran Bao Toan, both over the age of 23, were among those required to leave the squad. The remaining players are all relatively young and are seen as having more potential for future development.
Thai Son, who was previously trusted by coach Philippe Troussier, was deemed to need more experience to fully develop. Currently, coach Kim Sang Sik has a midfield destroyer in Doan Ngoc Tan, who was called up for the first time after impressive performances with Thanh Hoa FC.
Thai Son, along with Van Truong, Dinh Bac, and Quoc Viet, are all young and are expected to form part of the U23 Vietnam squad for the 2026 AFC U23 Qualifiers and the 2025 SEA Games.
The group of three Nam Dinh players—Nguyen Van Vi, Nguyen Van Toan, and Nguyen Xuan Son—will join the Vietnam National Team later this evening (5/12). On the morning of 6/12, the team will depart for Laos to prepare for their opening match at the ASEAN Cup 2024.
Vietnam will face Laos at 20:00 on December 9 at the National Stadium of Laos.
