Vietnam national team departs for Manila, ready to face Philippines

On the morning of December 16th, the Vietnam national team arrived at Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi) to board their flight to the Philippines, preparing for their fourth match in the Group B of the 2024 ASEAN Cup.

With the team’s flight departing at 8:30 AM, Quang Hai and his teammates had to arrive early for check-in. Despite having to wake up early after a tense match against Indonesia, the team, led by Coach Kim Sang-sik, showed great determination. The 1-0 victory over Indonesia had filled the players with enthusiasm, as it allowed them to reclaim the top spot in Group B.

The team arrived at Noi Bai Airport at 6 AM on December 16th, and one team member humorously said, “We had to fight off sleep to get here.”

After the game the previous night, Coach Kim Sang-sik couldn’t hide his happiness over Vietnam’s crucial win against Indonesia in the second match of Group B of the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship.

When asked about the narrow victory over Indonesia, Coach Kim said, “The players wanted to score more goals. I know the fans expected more goals, and I expected the same, but it was difficult. However, Quang Hai scored the one goal we needed to secure the win. We are a bit disappointed with not having more goals, but in the end, we got the three points. The players’ will to win was strong, and that makes me happy.”

Upon arrival in the Philippines, the team will rest. The starting players or those who played most of the game will relax and recover, while the others will continue to train to maintain their physical condition.

On December 18th, Vietnam will face the host nation, the Philippines. Due to the tight schedule, Coach Kim Sang-sik stated, “All teams face the challenge of a busy schedule, which affects the players’ health. I, the coaching staff, and the players all understand this, and as I said, every team faces this problem—there are no exceptions. We will adjust to ensure the players are in the best condition.”

Vietnam’s goal for this match is to secure three points. At the moment, “The Golden Stars Warriors” are considered the favorites against the Philippines, who have only two points in the 2024 ASEAN Cup. A victory would put Coach Kim Sang-sik in a good position to plan for the semifinals. The match between the Philippines and Vietnam will take place at 8:00 PM on December 18th at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
