Potential opponents of the Vietnam national team in the 2024 ASEAN Cup semifinals identified

Vietnam’s semifinal opponent in the ASEAN Cup 2024 has been determined as the group stage of Group A concluded. Under coach Kim Sang Sik, Vietnam is on the brink of advancing to the semifinals, with fans eagerly speculating about their potential rivals.

Thailand clinched the top spot in Group A following a commanding victory over Cambodia in their final match. The defending champions dominated throughout the group stage and solidified their position as the strongest team in Group A. If Vietnam progresses from Group B as the runner-up, they will face Thailand in a blockbuster semifinal clash. This potential matchup would rekindle the rivalry between two of Southeast Asia’s football giants, setting the stage for an intense encounter.

Meanwhile, Singapore secured their place in the semifinals as the runner-up of Group A after a goalless draw against Malaysia in their last group-stage match. The result allowed Singapore to edge past Malaysia on goal difference and claim second place. If Vietnam tops Group B, they will face Singapore in the semifinals. This matchup could offer Vietnam a comparatively more favorable path to the final, given Singapore’s mixed form in the tournament.

Vietnam’s fate depends on their performance against Myanmar in the final Group B match, scheduled for 8 PM on December 21 at Viet Tri Stadium. With seven points from three matches, Vietnam leads Group B and needs only a draw to secure the top spot. Advancing as group leaders would allow Vietnam to avoid a clash with Thailand in the semifinals and instead face Singapore. However, a defeat could see Vietnam drop to second place, setting up a challenging encounter with Thailand.

Vietnam’s journey so far has showcased resilience and determination. They opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Laos, followed by a hard-fought 1-0 win against Indonesia. In their most recent match, Vietnam salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Philippines with a last-minute equalizer from Doan Ngoc Tan, keeping their unbeaten record intact.

As the competition intensifies, Vietnam remains focused on their goal of reclaiming the regional crown. Whether they face Singapore or Thailand in the semifinals, the team will aim to build on their momentum and deliver a strong performance in pursuit of ASEAN Cup glory.
