Vietnam claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Thailand in the first leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final at Viet Tri Stadium, Phu Tho. The victory gives Vietnam a crucial edge ahead of the second leg in Bangkok.
Entering the match with the advantage of extra rest and home-field support, Coach Kim Sang-sik’s team immediately pushed the tempo to dominate possession. Early chances fell to Van Vi, Xuan Son, Van Thanh, and Vi Hao, but none managed to convert, leaving the match goalless at halftime.
Coach Kim made tactical adjustments during the break, and Vietnam resumed their aggressive play in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 59th minute when Xuan Son headed home from close range to put the hosts ahead.
Riding the momentum, Vietnam continued to press Thailand’s defense. Xuan Son doubled his tally in the 73rd minute with a stunning left-footed strike, leaving Thai goalkeeper Patiwat with no chance. The stadium erupted as Vietnam extended their lead.
Thailand fought back and nearly scored with a free-kick from Suphanat that hit the crossbar. Just two minutes later, Chalermsak capitalized on a set-piece, heading in a goal for Thailand in the 83rd minute to reduce the deficit.
Both teams created opportunities in the closing minutes, but neither could find the back of the net again. The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for Vietnam, giving them a narrow advantage heading into the second leg.
Vietnam’s strong performance at Viet Tri Stadium sets the stage for an intense rematch at Rajamangala Stadium on January 5, as both teams vie for the AFF Cup 2024 championship.
