Cong Phuong scores another “free-kick masterpiece,” Binh Phuoc maintains their promotion goal

Binh Phuoc, April 26, 2025 – Nguyen Cong Phuong delivered another breathtaking free-kick goal to break the deadlock, leading Binh Phuoc FC to a 2-0 victory over Dong Thap FC in Round 16 of the 2024-2025 V.League 2 on April 26. The win keeps Binh Phuoc FC’s V.League 1 promotion dreams alive, solidifying their push for the top spot.
Playing at home with roaring support, Binh Phuoc FC dominated possession against a defensively stubborn Dong Thap FC, who sit mid-table. Despite their control, Binh Phuoc FC struggled to convert, with strikers Luu Tu Nhan and Nguyen Cong Phuong thwarted by imprecise final touches. Over 70 minutes, chances from open play—like Tran Van Trung’s 55th-minute volley—were squandered, echoing Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s recent V.League frustrations.
The turning point came in the 73rd minute. Awarded a free kick 30 meters out, Cong Phuong, a former Hanoi Police FC star, curled a sublime shot over the wall, beyond goalkeeper Nguyen Van Minh’s reach, to make it 1-0. Remarkably, this marked his third free-kick goal in two matches, following his brace against Hoa Binh FC. In stoppage time, Cong Phuong turned provider, threading a pinpoint pass to Nguyen Thanh Dat, who slotted a tight-angle finish to seal the 2-0 triumph.
Binh Phuoc FC’s victory lifts them to 36 points after 16 matches, keeping them second behind Phu Dong Ninh Binh (42 points) with six rounds left. The result strengthens their promotion play-off hopes, aiming to join The Cong Viettel in the V.League next season. Cong Phuong, despite missing eight rounds due to a thigh injury, now boasts seven goals and four assists, tying for the division’s top scorer.
The 30-year-old, a Song Lam Nghe An native and Hoang Anh Gia Lai JMG Academy graduate, has rediscovered his 2018 AFF Cup form since joining Binh Phuoc FC in 2024. His set-piece mastery, likened to Nguyen Quang Hai’s flair, has fans dreaming of a V.League return. Coach Tran Minh Chien praised Cong Phuong’s leadership, per post-match comments, as Binh Phuoc FC gears up for a crucial clash with PVF-CAND. With 4,000 supporters packing Binh Phuoc Stadium, the team’s momentum mirrors Vietnam’s 2024 ASEAN Cup surge, signaling a potential top-flight revival.
