Nguyen Thuy Linh defeats the world champion at 2025 Malaysia Masters

Malaysia, 21 May, 2025 – Vietnam’s top-ranked badminton player, Nguyen Thyy Linh (world rank 27), defeated the 2019 Women’s Singles World Badminton Champion, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu (India), at the 2025 Malaysia Masters tournament today (May 21).

In their previous encounter in January at the Indonesia Masters, Nguyen Thuy Linh also triumphed over the Indian badminton icon, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu. In this rematch at the Malaysia Masters, the Vietnamese player continued her dominant performance.

Starting strong with great fitness, Nguyen Thuy Linh controlled the match and won decisively 21-11 in the first game. Experience and resilience helped the Indian player claim a 21-14 victory in the second game, leveling the score 1-1.

In the deciding third game, the Dong Nai-born player returned to her powerful form, scoring with aggressive smashes to win 21-15, securing a 2-1 overall victory. Pusarla Venkata Sindhu displayed a decline in form and became frustrated with herself, even smashing her racket and receiving a red card from the referee, which resulted in a point deduction.

With this win in the first round of the Malaysia Masters Women’s Singles, Nguyen Thyy Linh advances to the second round, where she will face the winner of the match between Tidapron (Thailand, world rank 80) and Christophersen Line (Denmark, world rank 35).
