Vietnam national team departs for Malaysia: Determined to bring back 3 points

Hanoi, 6 June, 2025 – On the morning of June 6, the Vietnam national team departed for Malaysia to prepare for their clash with the host nation in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, scheduled for June 10 at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

After a week of training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center (Hanoi), the Vietnam national team set off for Malaysia on the morning of June 6 in preparation for the upcoming match against the host nation.

Coach Kim Sang-sik and his squad boarded flight VJ905, which took off at 7:25 AM from Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (in the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur). The team will fly for 3 hours and is expected to land at 11:30 AM (local time).

The head of the Vietnam team delegation for this important away match is Mr. Tran Anh Tu, the Vice President in charge of professional affairs at the Vietnam Football Federation.

After landing, the team will head to the hotel to rest and have lunch before going to the training field to acclimatize to the weather and conditions later this afternoon. Except for the absences of Cong Phuong, Viet Anh, and Thanh Binh (who are replaced by Quoc Viet, Van Toi, and Ly Duc), Coach Kim Sang-sik has his optimal lineup ready, with all players in good physical condition, having fully adhered to the training program in the last two sessions.

The Vietnam team won 2-1 against the U22 Vietnam team in a practice match on June 5, with goals from Do Duy Manh and Chau Ngoc Quang. Coach Kim Sang-sik divided the match into three segments, each lasting 30 minutes, giving all players the opportunity to prove themselves, including newcomers like Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, Ly Duc, and Quoc Viet.

This was the only friendly match for the Vietnam national team in preparation for the upcoming encounter with Malaysia. In contrast, the Malaysia team played two friendlies against Cape Verde, ranked 72nd in the world. They drew 1-1 in the first match and lost 0-3 in the second.

The match between Malaysia and Vietnam will take place at Bukit Jalil Stadium on the evening of June 10. This is the second match of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. After the opening round, Vietnam leads the group with a 5-0 win over Laos, while Malaysia is in second place after defeating Nepal 2-0 at home. If Vietnam draws with Malaysia, they will definitely retain the top spot after the second round.

The Vietnam national team remains unbeaten against Malaysia for 11 years, with 5 wins and 1 draw. The last meeting between the two teams was in the group stage of the 2022 AFF Cup, where Vietnam won 3-0 at My Dinh Stadium. While Vietnam won the AFF Cup 2024 and finished as runners-up in the 2022 AFF Cup, Malaysia was eliminated in the group stage in both tournaments.
