Nguyen Thuy Linh advances to quarterfinals of Canada Open 2025

Ontario, 4 July, 2025 – Vietnam’s top badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh has booked her place in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event at the 2025 Canada Open, a BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament with a total prize pool of 240,000 USD.

In her round of 16 match held late on July 3 (Vietnam time), the world No. 22 and second seed faced a tough challenge from Taiwan’s Chen Su Yu, ranked 91st in the world. Chen surprised Linh in the opening set, capitalizing on the Vietnamese star’s psychological pressure to edge a 21-19 win.

However, Nguyen Thuy Linh bounced back strongly in the second set. Regaining her confidence and composure, the 26-year-old unleashed a variety of powerful and precise shots. She produced an impressive 14-point scoring streak to lead 20-6 before closing the set 21-7 and leveling the match.

With momentum on her side, Linh maintained dominance in the deciding third set. Although Chen Su Yu kept pace early on, Linh pulled away with another scoring burst, recording 11 consecutive points to seal the set 21-10. The victory marked a hard-fought 2-1 comeback and a spot in the final eight.

In the quarterfinals, Nguyen Thuy Linh will face Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching, world No. 87. Though lower in ranking, the 21-year-old Malaysian possesses youthful energy and is expected to present a challenge for Linh in the upcoming clash.

While Linh continues her successful campaign in Canada, Vietnam’s men’s singles representative Nguyen Hai Dang was eliminated in the second round. Facing world No. 7 and second seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan, Hai Dang could not match the Japanese star’s intensity and lost 0-2 (10-21, 11-21).

Nguyen Thuy Linh’s performance has reignited hopes for Vietnamese badminton fans, and she remains one of the top contenders for the title in the women’s singles draw of the 2025 Canada Open.
