AFF applies VAR technology in the blockbuster between U23 Vietnam and U23 Indonesia

Jakarta, 28 July, 2025 – The final match of the 2025 U23 ASEAN Championship between Vietnam and Indonesia, scheduled for 20:00 on July 29 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, will feature a historic first: the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology.

This is the first time in the history of the U23 ASEAN Championship that VAR will be implemented. The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) confirmed that the technology will be applied to ensure the highest standards of refereeing and uphold the spirit of fair play.

β€œThe introduction of VAR in the final will help improve the accuracy of decisions in key moments and enhance fairness and transparency in the competition,” AFF stated.

Vietnam, the defending champions and the most successful team in the tournament with two consecutive titles (2022 and 2023), will aim to set a new record with a third straight championship. Meanwhile, Indonesia, champions in 2019, are determined to reclaim regional glory on home soil.

With the deployment of VAR and the high stakes at play, the final promises to deliver both drama and quality as two regional powerhouses battle for the title.
