AFC praises the historic achievement of Vietnam U17

Saudi Arabia 15 May 2026 – Vietnam U17 have earned widespread praise for their impressive performances ahead of their quarter-final clash against Australia U17 at the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026.

The Vietnamese side has emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. Despite suffering a narrow late defeat to South Korea U17 during the group stage, Vietnam responded strongly with impressive victories over Yemen U17 (1-0) and United Arab Emirates U17 (3-2) to finish top of Group C and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

By advancing beyond the group stage, Vietnam U17 also officially booked a historic ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026. However, coach Cristiano Roland and his players remain fully focused on going even further as they prepare for a crucial knockout encounter against Australia U17.

In its preview of the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 quarter-finals, Asian Football Confederation highlighted Vietnam’s strong displays throughout the tournament.

“Vietnam U17 will be determined to maintain their momentum after fighting hard to reach the quarter-finals,” AFC wrote.

“Their dramatic 3-2 victory over UAE U17 allowed them to finish above South Korea U17 at the top of Group C. Showing great determination and spirit, the Southeast Asian representatives will now aim to continue their journey into the semi-finals.”

The AFC article also noted that Australia U17 will need to quickly recover both mentally and physically following their group-stage defeat to Uzbekistan U17. Notably, Vietnam U17 previously defeated Australia U17 in the semi-finals of the ASEAN U17 Championship 2026.

The quarter-final showdown between Vietnam U17 and Australia U17 is scheduled to kick off at 00:00 on May 17.
