Vietnam Karate team adds more gold medals to extend dominance at 2026 Southeast Asian Championships

Ninh Binh, 11 July 2026 – Vietnam Karate team continued its outstanding campaign at the 2026 Southeast Asian Karate Championships in Ninh Binh on July 11, collecting several more gold medals on the penultimate day of competition to strengthen its lead in the overall standings.

One of the day’s highlights came in the women’s 68kg final, where Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly faced fellow Vietnamese teammate Tran Thi Quynh Anh. Demonstrating her superior technique and composure, Dieu Ly cruised to a convincing 7-1 victory to secure the gold medal. The triumph also marked her second consecutive international title in the space of two weeks, having previously captured the women’s 68kg crown at the 2026 Asian Karate Championships.

Vietnam enjoyed another dominant performance in the women’s 61kg division, where Hoang Thi My Tam defeated Adnan Zakiah of Malaysia in the final. My Tam controlled the bout from start to finish, scoring with decisive attacks to claim an emphatic 8-0 victory.

“I’m very happy to win this gold medal. It’s a result I’ve been working toward for a long time,” My Tam said after receiving her medal.

In the women’s over-68kg category, Dinh Thi Huong also delivered for the host nation, defeating Songklin Kewalin of Thailand by 2-0 to add another gold medal to Vietnam’s impressive tally.

The men’s competition produced an all-Vietnam final in the 67kg division, featuring SEA Games 33 champion Khuat Hai Nam and Dang Hong Son. Neither athlete managed to score during the cautious contest, but after evaluating the bout, the referees awarded victory to Dang Hong Son based on his superior tactical advantage, denying Hai Nam another regional title.

With one day of competition remaining, Vietnam sits comfortably atop the medal table with 25 gold, 29 silver, and 31 bronze medals. Indonesia occupies second place with 13 gold, 11 silver, and 18 bronze medals, while Malaysia is third on 6 gold, 5 silver, and 16 bronze medals.

The championship will conclude on July 12, when the final kumite (sparring) and kata (forms) events are held before the tournament officially comes to a close.
