Thailand, 2 August 2026 – Vietnam women’s volleyball team fell short in its bid to capture the SEA V.Cup 2026 Leg 1 championship, suffering a straight-sets defeat to regional rivals Thailand in the tournament’s decisive match on Saturday night in Dong Anh, Hanoi.
The match attracted a packed crowd, with thousands of Vietnamese fans filling the stands in hopes of seeing head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his players lift another title on home soil. However, Thailand once again demonstrated why they remain Southeast Asia’s dominant force in women’s volleyball.
Vietnam started the opening set with determination, matching Thailand point for point in the early exchanges. The coaching staff entrusted Nhu Quynh, Anh Thao, and opposite hitter Tra My with leading the attack, while setter Yen Nhi looked to create opportunities through quick distribution to both wings.
Despite Vietnam’s positive approach, Thailand’s well-organized blocking proved difficult to overcome. The visitors also executed their offensive system with remarkable efficiency, consistently breaking through Vietnam’s defensive line. Thailand gradually pulled away before claiming the first set 25-18.
Looking to turn the tide, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet introduced experienced attackers Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Nguyen Thi Uyen for the remaining sets. However, Vietnam struggled to establish attacking rhythm, with their offensive combinations lacking the fluidity needed to trouble Thailand’s disciplined defense.
As the match progressed, Thailand grew increasingly confident, maintaining a high level of consistency in both attack and defense. Vietnam, meanwhile, found it difficult to convert key scoring opportunities, and the pressure began to affect the hosts’ confidence during crucial moments.
Thailand capitalized on the momentum to comfortably take the second set 25-17 before completing a dominant performance with a 25-14 victory in the third.
The 3-0 win secured the SEA V.Cup 2026 Leg 1 title for Thailand, while Vietnam had to settle for the runner-up finish despite playing in front of their home supporters.
The result came as a disappointment for Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s squad, who entered the match with a genuine opportunity to win the championship on home court. Although they were unable to overcome their long-time regional rivals, Vietnam’s performances throughout the tournament still highlighted the team’s competitiveness and provided valuable experience ahead of the challenges awaiting later in the international season.
