Hanoi, 24 August 2026 – Vietnam’s women’s volleyball team secured an important 3-0 victory over Hong Kong on the morning of August 24, strengthening their chances of reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship.
Following their 3-1 defeat to South Korea in the opening match, Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s side entered their second fixture knowing that a straight-sets victory would significantly improve their position in the race for a place in the last eight.
Vietnam made a positive start and controlled much of the opening set, consistently maintaining a lead over their opponents. However, Hong Kong applied greater pressure toward the closing stages, briefly reducing the deficit and forcing Vietnam into several uncomfortable situations.
The experience of Vietnam’s senior players eventually proved decisive. They regained control at the crucial moment and closed out the first set 25-19.
With the early pressure lifted, Vietnam raised their level considerably in the second set.
Even with star player Tran Thi Thanh Thuy rested on the sidelines, Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s team dominated proceedings. Vietnam quickly established a commanding advantage and never allowed Hong Kong back into contention, cruising to a 25-12 victory and moving within one set of the match.
The third set initially proved far more difficult.
Hong Kong started strongly and repeatedly moved ahead on the scoreboard, while Vietnam were dealt an additional setback when Nguyen Thi Uyen suffered an injury while jumping to attack and was unable to continue.
Despite losing Uyen, Vietnam remained composed. The players tightened their formation, improved their execution and made the most of their scoring opportunities to completely turn the set around.
Once they regained control, Vietnam pulled away rapidly and eventually sealed the third set 25-11, completing a convincing 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-11.
The result provides an important boost for Vietnam after their opening defeat and keeps their Asian Championship 2026 quarterfinal hopes firmly alive as Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s team continue their Group C campaign.
