Three Vietnamese cueists withdraw from billiards tournament in China over illegal “Nine-Dash Line” issue

Hainan, 26 April 2026 – Vietnamese cueists Duong Quoc Hoang, Nguyen Anh Tuan, and Le Quang Trung have all pulled out of the Peri–Laili Cup 2026 in Hainan, China after discovering that the tournament’s branding featured the controversial “nine-dash line.”

The three players made the decision after identifying the image within the event’s visual system, which they consider a serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty. A statement from Peri Vietnam Team—the management unit of Nguyen Anh Tuan and Le Quang Trung—confirmed: “Both Anh Tuan and Quoc Hoang will withdraw from the Peri–Laili Cup. The reason is the presence of the nine-dash line logo, which seriously violates Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty. Despite all the effort invested, this is a matter that cannot be compromised. Hoang Sa and Truong Sa belong to Vietnam.”

The organization Vietnam Billiards Promotion also verified the incident, confirming the withdrawal of all three players and announcing the suspension of all broadcast activities related to the Peri–Laili Cup 2026.

The tournament is being held in Hainan from April 26 to 30, 2026, co-organized with the China Billiards and Snooker Association. It has attracted many top Asian players and offers a total prize pool of approximately 822,000 yuan (around VND 3.1 billion).

This is not the first time Vietnamese players have taken a firm stance on such issues. Previously, Tran Quyet Chien withdrew from an event in Shanghai in 2023 for the same reason.
