In a significant shift to improve their standings in the ongoing V-League 2023/2024, Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) has announced a change in their coaching staff. With only 15 points from 17 games, leaving them just above the relegation zone, the team from Nghe An province has appointed Pham Anh Tuan as the new head coach, replacing Phan Nhu Thuat from Round 18 of the league.
This strategic move was confirmed on May 11, 2024, following discussions between the club’s management and coaching staff. Pham Anh Tuan, a former player and native of Vinh, Nghe An, takes the reins at a crucial juncture, bringing his defensive tactical expertise, which could suit SLNA’s current roster well. The club statement noted that Phan Nhu Thuat would continue to contribute to the team but in the capacity of an assistant coach.
Pham Anh Tuan, born in 1970, has previously managed Hai Phong in the V-League, where he was known for his structured and counter-attacking approach to gameplay. This experience is expected to bring a much-needed revitalization to SLNA, which has struggled to find consistent form this season.
Currently languishing at 14th place, only five points clear of the bottom team Khanh Hoa and five points behind Thanh Hoa FC, SLNA faces a real threat of relegation if their fortunes do not turn around in the remaining nine rounds. The team’s first challenge under Coach Tuan will be a home game against TP.HCM, who have the worst away record this season. This match is seen as a prime opportunity for SLNA to start their climb away from the drop zone.
SLNA fans and stakeholders are hopeful that this coaching change will instill a new spirit and tactical acumen, steering the club away from the relegation battle as they head into the critical closing stages of the Night Wolf V-League 1 2023/2024.
