Vietnam secures its 12th ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics

On the evening of June 17, Vietnamese sports celebrated as archer Le Quoc Phong secured a place in the men’s individual event at the Paris Olympics.

Le Quoc Phong advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s individual archery event at the Olympic qualifying round in Turkey on June 17. With five Olympic berths available in this event, a victory would guarantee Phong’s ticket to Paris.

Facing Bangladesh’s archer Ram Krishna Saha, Quoc Phong maintained his consistent performance, winning 6-2, thereby officially securing his spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Le Quoc Phong is currently in the peak form of his career. In April, he made history for Vietnamese archery by becoming the first Vietnamese archer to reach the top four at a World Cup event. This prestigious tournament featured the world’s top archers and was crucial for earning team points for the Olympics. Additionally, Phong had the honor of competing against his idol, former world number one Lee Woo Seok of South Korea.

Vietnamese sports have already secured 11 other spots for the Paris Olympics this year, including athletes in various disciplines:

  • Badminton: Nguyen Thuy Linh, Le Duc Phat
  • Shooting: Trinh Thu Vinh, Le Thi Mong Tuyen
  • Swimming: Nguyen Huy Hoang
  • Cycling: Nguyen Thi That
  • Weightlifting: Trinh Van Vinh
  • Boxing: Vo Thi Kim Anh, Ha Thi Linh
  • Canoeing: Nguyen Thi Huong
  • Rowing: Pham Thi Hue

Le Quoc Phong’s qualification adds to the growing list of Vietnamese athletes who will compete on the world stage in Paris, showcasing the nation’s rising talent in various sports.
