
Vietnam’s top male badminton player, Le Duc Phat, made a remarkable debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics by defeating Germany’s Fabian Roth 2-0 in the men’s singles Group K match on July 31. The match, held at the Porte de la Chapelle sports complex, saw Duc Phat secure victory in just 34 minutes, showcasing his superior skills and confidence.
Entering the match with previous experience against Roth, having beaten him 2-0 at the Polish Open in March, Duc Phat approached the game with determination and poise. Currently ranked 71st in the world, Duc Phat faced Roth, ranked 59th, with a mix of tactical play and powerful smashes. His performance left Roth struggling to find a counter-strategy, resulting in a commanding win for the Vietnamese player.
The first set saw Duc Phat dominate from the start, quickly taking control and maintaining his lead to finish the set at 21-10. In the second set, despite a brief challenge from Roth, who leveled the score at 5-5, Duc Phat remained composed. He quickly regained control, employing a variety of shots, including sharp smashes and delicate net plays. A decisive seven-point run solidified his dominance, leading to another 21-10 victory.
The win sets Duc Phat up for a crucial match against India’s Prannoy Kumar, who is ranked 13th in the world. This upcoming match will determine the top spot in Group F and the qualification for the next round. The match is scheduled for 12:30 AM on August 1 and is expected to be a challenging encounter for Duc Phat.
Born in 1998 in Dong Nai, Duc Phat comes from a family with a rich martial arts tradition. His father and several uncles were notable martial artists who achieved success in national and international competitions. Initially dabbling in martial arts and soccer, Duc Phat eventually found his passion in badminton. He has since risen to become Vietnam’s number one male badminton player and was honored as the flag bearer for the Vietnamese delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympic opening ceremony.
