Central defender Bui Hoang Viet Anh has sustained a knee ligament injury following the 2-1 victory over Buriram United FC in the ASEAN Club Championship. Although the injury is not deemed too severe, medical scans have confirmed that Viet Anh will not recover in time to join head coach Kim Sang-sik and the Vietnam national team for their upcoming commitments. This is a significant setback as the team prepares for the highly anticipated LPBank Cup 2024, where they are set to face strong opponents, including Russia and Thailand.
Viet Anh’s injury comes as a blow to Vietnam’s defensive lineup, as he has been a key figure in the team’s backline. His solid performances have not only earned him a spot in the national team but also made him a reliable option in defense for his club. The injury, resulting from a clash in the match against Buriram United, has caused damage to his knee ligaments, which, while not critical, requires rest and rehabilitation. This means Viet Anh will miss out on the chance to represent his country in the upcoming international friendlies.
This setback marks the second significant loss for the Vietnamese squad, as fellow center-back Duy Manh is also sidelined due to a separate injury. Duy Manh’s absence had already left a gap in the defense, and now, with Viet Anh also out, the team faces a defensive crisis. The Vietnamese defense will be tested against the physical and technical prowess of their upcoming opponents, making these injuries even more concerning for head coach Kim Sang-sik.
In response to this defensive dilemma, coach Kim Sang-sik has acted quickly to fill the void left by the injured defenders. He has called up Giap Tuan Duong to join the national team. Giap Tuan Duong is an emerging talent who has been making waves with his performances at the club level. Although he is relatively young, born in 2000, Duong has experience with the national setup, having been called up multiple times by former head coach Philippe Troussier. His previous exposure to international matches and his familiarity with the team’s playing style make him a suitable replacement under the circumstances.
Giap Tuan Duong’s inclusion will bolster the defense, providing the much-needed depth and versatility. However, it will also be an opportunity for him to showcase his abilities on a bigger stage, potentially solidifying his position as a regular member of the national squad. The upcoming matches in the LPBank Cup 2024 will serve as a test for Duong and the other defenders, who will need to step up in the absence of seasoned players like Viet Anh and Duy Manh.
The national team will need to adapt quickly, focusing on strengthening their defensive strategies and ensuring that the new lineup can perform cohesively. Coach Kim Sang-sik will have to rely on his tactical acumen to reorganize the backline, maintain defensive stability, and continue Vietnam’s pursuit of success on the international stage.
