The match between Vietnam and Indonesia in the ASEAN Cup 2024 has garnered significant attention from fans, as it is seen as a crucial decider for the top spot in Group B. Despite fielding a youthful squad, Indonesia made an impressive start to their campaign by winning 1-0 against Myanmar in their opening match away from home.
Following Vietnam’s victory over Laos, the team has had their first training session at Vietnam’s home ground, the Viet Tri Stadium, preparing for their upcoming clash. Vietnam enjoys an advantage with more rest compared to Indonesia, as they did not play in the fixtures on December 12.
In evaluating their opponent, Vietnam’s midfielder Hoang Duc pointed out a key difference in the Indonesian squad compared to their previous encounters in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers: “As for Indonesia, I believe this time around, they will not have as many naturalized players as they did in the World Cup qualifiers. Most of their players are now playing in their domestic league. I’ve had the chance to face them previously when playing here at the SEA Games. I think the next match will be very exciting because Indonesia has made significant progress.”
With Indonesia fielding more young players, Vietnam is still considered the favorite but remains cautious, especially since the team had some difficulties in their match against Laos. The players, including Hoang Duc, are focused on improving their performance in their upcoming games.
Hoang Duc also reflected on his personal performance in the first match: “Personally, I didn’t perform at my best in that game. During our meeting this morning, the whole team, including myself, reviewed and discussed how to improve for the next match. For me, it’s not about who I play with or who partners with me; we all understand each other well from our time training together in Korea.”
Vietnam will host Indonesia at 8:00 PM on December 15 at Viet Tri Stadium, with both teams aiming for a crucial victory in this highly anticipated match.
