Coach Shin Tae Yong admitted that Indonesia had learned a valuable lesson after their 0-1 defeat to Vietnam in the third match of Group B at the ASEAN Cup 2024.
Speaking to the media after the loss to Vietnam, Coach Shin Tae Yong acknowledged: “I congratulate Vietnam and Coach Kim Sang Sik for winning this match. We had many young players today, and as a result, the players showed clear limitations in terms of experience.”
“However, the players gave their best effort and worked hard for the national team. Of course, there is still a significant gap between experienced players and younger ones. Indonesia has learned a lesson from this match against Vietnam,” he added.
Reflecting further on the young players of Indonesia, Coach Shin Tae Yong noted, “We need more time for the younger players to improve. At the moment, I cannot expect too much from them or apply advanced tactics with such a young squad.”
When asked about comparing the current Vietnam team with the one under Coach Troussier, Coach Shin responded diplomatically, saying, “I don’t think it’s helpful to compare Vietnam at this point with the team from March.”
Regarding the tight schedule in the ASEAN Cup 2024, Coach Shin Tae Yong remarked, “I believe all teams are dealing with a heavy schedule. Indonesia does not have direct flights to the countries where we are playing. On average, we have to fly about five hours, and for Myanmar, it’s 16 hours. I feel tired from traveling such long distances, so the players must be even more exhausted.”
Despite the loss to Vietnam, Coach Shin Tae Yong remained confident, stating, “Although we lost to Vietnam, I believe we will make it to the semifinals, and I will prepare my team accordingly for that challenge.”
