Cong Phuong falls short in V.League 2 top score race

Binh Phuoc, 22 June, 2025 – On the afternoon of June 21, Binh Phuoc wrapped up their 2024/25 V.League 2 campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory over Long An, securing second place and a playoff berth for promotion to V.League 1. While the team celebrated a successful end to the season, star striker Nguyen Cong Phuong fell short in his bid to claim the top scorer title, finishing second behind rising teammate Luu Tu Nhan.

In the crucial final match, Luu Tu Nhan delivered a stellar performance, scoring twice to increase his season tally to nine goals, overtaking Cong Phuong, who ended with seven goals. The brace not only ensured Binh Phuoc’s win but also earned Tu Nhan the Golden Boot of the 2024/25 season.

Despite missing out on the individual honor, Cong Phuong played a key role throughout the season, leading Binh Phuoc’s resurgence with consistent performances. The Nghệ An-born striker impressed with his set-piece prowess, notably scoring three goals from direct free kicks across two matches — a brace in a comeback win over Hoa Binh (2-1) and a crucial goal in the 2-1 victory against Dong Thap.

His standout form earned him a call-up to the Vietnam national team for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, but unfortunately, an injury to the sole of his foot forced him to withdraw prematurely.

While the Golden Boot eluded him, the 2024/25 season marked a significant comeback for Cong Phuong following a challenging period in his career. With renewed form and confidence, he now turns his focus to the upcoming V.League promotion playoff set for 6:00 PM on June 27 at Thong Nhat Stadium, where Binh Phuoc will face the 13th-placed team from V.League 1. The goal: to secure their place in the 2025/26 V.League 1 season.
