BWF 2025: Nguyen Thuy Linh defeats former world No. 1

Paris, 26 August, 2025 – The 2025 BWF World Championships officially kicked off in Paris on August 25, bringing together the world’s top badminton stars for one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments. Vietnam has sent a six-player contingent to France, featuring representatives across both singles and doubles events.

The national team includes two women’s singles players, Nguyen Thuy Linh and Vu Thi Trang, along with men’s singles representatives Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Hai Dang. In addition, Vietnam will also compete in men’s doubles with the pairing of Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Manh.

On the opening day of competition, three Vietnamese players are scheduled to take the court. The first to appear will be Nguyen Thuy Linh, who faces a challenging first-round clash against former world champion and 10th seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand at 18:10 local time. Following her, at around 19:30, Le Duc Phat will take on Belgian shuttler Julien Carraggi in men’s singles. Closing Vietnam’s campaign on the opening day will be the men’s doubles pair Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Manh, who are set for a late-night match at approximately 2:00 AM on August 26 (Vietnam time).

Meanwhile, the remaining two players, Vu Thi Trang and Nguyen Hai Dang, are scheduled to begin their campaigns on August 26, promising more action for Vietnamese badminton fans.

The World Championships, organized annually under the Badminton World Federation (BWF), not only provide athletes with the chance to test themselves against elite opponents but also award significant world ranking points and prize money. Performances here often shape the rankings that determine Olympic qualification and future seeding in major tournaments.

Vietnam’s badminton has enjoyed memorable moments on the world stage in the past, most notably when veteran shuttler Nguyen Tien Minh won a historic bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships in Guangzhou, China. That breakthrough remains the nation’s greatest achievement in badminton at the global level and continues to inspire younger generations.

For Nguyen Thuy Linh, currently regarded as Vietnam’s top female badminton player, the challenge of facing Ratchanok Intanon represents both a test and an opportunity. A victory against the Thai star could provide a huge momentum boost for the 2025 season. Similarly, the men’s singles representatives Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Hai Dang will aim to prove themselves against higher-ranked opponents, while the doubles duo Hoang and Manh hope to gain invaluable international experience.

With the tournament running from August 25 to 31, Vietnamese fans will closely follow every match, hoping for strong performances and perhaps even a breakthrough moment similar to Nguyen Tien Minh’s historic run more than a decade ago.
