Vietnam gymnastics team makes history at 2026 FIG World Challenge Cup in Tashkent

Uzbekistan, 23 May 2026 – Vietnamese artistic gymnastics team has delivered a remarkable performance at the 2026 FIG World Challenge Cup, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from May 21 to 24, returning home with two prestigious medals that mark a historic milestone for the sport in Vietnam.

The highlight of the competition came when Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu produced an outstanding vault performance, scoring 13.175 points to claim the gold medal — a historic achievement for the Ho Chi Minh City-born athlete, born in 1998, whose previous best had been a silver medal at the Asian Championships in the same event.

The gold is a long-awaited breakthrough for Quynh Nhu, who has been steadily climbing the ranks of Asian gymnastics over the past several years. She had previously earned silver in the women’s vault at the Asian Championships and was considered a strong contender for gold in international competitions. This World Challenge Cup title now cements her status as one of Southeast Asia’s premier vaulters on the global stage.

Following Quynh Nhu’s golden performance, Nguyen Van Khanh Phong added to Vietnam’s medal haul by claiming silver in the men’s still rings event. Khanh Phong has been a consistent performer for Vietnam in recent years, and this podium finish further reinforces his reputation as one of the country’s top male gymnasts.

The Tashkent World Challenge Cup is the second stop of the 2026 FIG World Challenge Cup Series, which also includes events in Koper, Szombathely, and Paris. While the series does not carry world championship qualification points, it remains a prestigious platform for gymnasts to showcase their skills against international competition.

The double-medal haul marks Vietnam’s most successful outing at a World Challenge Cup and signals growing ambition for the national team, with ASIAD 2026 and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics firmly in their sights.
