Nagoya, 16 Sep 2026 – Vietnam’s women’s volleyball team made a commanding start to their ASIAD 2026 campaign on September 16, sweeping Qatar 3-0 in just 49 minutes in their opening Group D match.
With victory considered essential to strengthen their chances of progressing to the next round, Vietnam approached the contest seriously despite facing a considerably weaker opponent.
Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet fielded his strongest available lineup from the start, and the decision quickly paid off as Vietnam established complete control of the opening set.
They raced into 4-1 and 7-2 leads before producing an extraordinary scoring run with captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy at the service line.
With Vietnam leading 8-2, Thanh Thuy began serving and Qatar struggled to find any response. Vietnam reeled off point after point, with their captain continuing to serve until the score reached 22-2, when she finally committed a service error to bring the remarkable run to an end.
Vietnam comfortably closed out the opening set 25-3.
With the match firmly under control, Nguyen Tuan Kiet began resting several key players from the second set, including Thanh Thuy, setter Vo Thi Kim Thoa and middle blocker Bich Thuy.
The changes did little to alter the balance of the contest, however, as Vietnam’s remaining players maintained their dominance.
They took the next two sets 25-8 and 25-9 to complete a straightforward 3-0 victory after only 49 minutes of play.
Vietnam’s superiority was also reflected in the statistics. They collected 43 points from attacks, five from blocks and an impressive 13 directly from serves. Another 14 points came from errors committed by Qatar.
While the level of opposition provided Vietnam with few serious difficulties, the match offered Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s players a useful opportunity to settle into the competitive rhythm of the Asian Games and work on their tactical combinations.
The convincing victory gives Vietnam an encouraging start to their ASIAD 2026 campaign before they face more demanding challenges later in the tournament.
