AFF announces draw for inaugural U19 and U16 futsal championships 2025

Bangkok, 28 October 2025 – On the afternoon of October 28, in Thailand, the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) conducted the official draw and match schedule for the first-ever AFF U19 Futsal Championship and AFF U16 Futsal Championship 2025, marking a new milestone in developing youth futsal across Southeast Asia.

The AFF U19 and U16 Futsal Championships 2025 will officially take place in Nonthaburi, Thailand, bringing together the best young futsal talents from across the region. This marks the first time the ASEAN Football Federation has organized tournaments exclusively for youth futsal teams, aiming to provide a dedicated platform for nurturing future stars of the sport.

According to the official draw results, at the AFF U19 Futsal Championship 2025, Vietnam was placed in Group A alongside Thailand and Brunei, while Group B features Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Cambodia. The tournament will run from December 23 to 29, 2025, at the Nonthaburi Indoor Stadium in Thailand. Teams will compete in a round-robin format within their groups, with the top two advancing to the semifinals to battle for a place in the final.

Meanwhile, the AFF U16 Futsal Championship 2025 will feature five teams — Thailand (host), Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Brunei. All five sides will compete in a single round-robin league, with the top two advancing to the final, and the third and fourth-placed teams contesting the bronze medal match. The U16 tournament will also be held at the same venue in Nonthaburi.

This dual championship represents a major step forward for futsal in Southeast Asia. Until now, the only regional youth futsal competition was the AFC U20 Futsal Championship, which has been suspended since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and has yet to resume. The new AFF-organized tournaments therefore fill a crucial gap, giving young futsal players in the region the chance to gain international experience.

Vietnamese youth futsal has maintained a stable development pathway in recent years. The national U19/U20 futsal teams are regularly assembled for training camps and friendly matches abroad, including two quality fixtures against Russia’s U19 team in 2024. Domestically, the Vietnam U20 National Futsal Championship organized by VFF has become an essential platform for identifying and developing promising young talents.

To prepare for these upcoming regional tournaments, the Vietnam U19 and U16 futsal teams are scheduled to begin training in Ho Chi Minh City from November 16, under the guidance of the VFF coaching staff, before heading to Thailand for competition in December.
