Vietnamese overseas player debuts in women’s national cup

The 2024 Women’s National Cup will take place from November 28 to December 13 in Hanoi, and clubs have finalized their rosters for the competition. In a significant move, Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Football Club has registered two Vietnamese-American players, Abigail Mai and Ashley Tram Anh, for the tournament.

Both players, who developed their skills in the U.S. women’s football academy system, play as midfielders. Notably, both Abigail Mai and Ashley Tram Anh are still under the age of 23. Their inclusion marks the first time that Vietnamese-American players will participate in the Women’s National Cup, following a regulation change by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) that permits teams to field Vietnamese overseas players who do not yet hold Vietnamese citizenship since the 2023 season.

Apart from the two Vietnamese-American players returning from the U.S., Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Football Club has maintained its strong squad, including key players such as Huynh Nhu, Thuy Trang, and Chuong Thi Kieu, who played pivotal roles in the club’s quarterfinal run in the 2024/2025 AFC Women’s Champions League. With this talented lineup, the club is a strong contender for the 2024 Women’s National Cup title.
